Health & Social Care

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”
– Helen Keller

Powerful Knowledge in Health and Social Care

Powerful knowledge in Health and Social Care is to take students beyond their own experiences to the reality of society. Students will gain knowledge of how different people grow and develop and the wider factors that can affect them. Through academic study, students will also gain the transferable skills of empathy, compassion and communication that can be taken into both the workplace and wider life experiences.

Curriculum Features

Health and Social Care is taught through the BTEC programme so students will be assessed through a combination of coursework and examinations. Students will plan, research and write coursework independently, which will develop their resilience and time management skills. Through the curriculum, students will gain an understanding of human growth and development and the health and social care services available to support people. Learners are given the opportunity to self-reflect about choices they make and how they affect others.

At KS5, the academic side of the subject is developed through a study of theoretical perspectives to develop critical thinking skills and an understanding of a range of academic views. The vocational aspect is encouraged through the opportunity to complete work experience in the health and social care sector. Throughout their studies, students are encouraged to question and debate topical issues and current affairs.

Co-curricular Enrichment

  • Students will have the opportunity to have talks from a range of guest speakers from the health and social care sector.
  • Students are invited to attend cross-curricular trips with the sociology and psychology departments to London.
  • Students are encouraged to complete wider reading of fiction and non-fiction texts and attend the Debate Club.
