Wrapped Up 2023: End of Year Highlights

The Autumn Term has been a fantastic start to the academic year at Hazel Grove High School, with lots of exciting things going on! To end what has been a brilliant year, we have wrapped up some of the highlights from the past few months.

Our new Sixth Form is officially open!

In September, we were delighted to open the doors to our newly redeveloped Sixth Form.

After two years of development, it has been incredible to welcome our new cohort of students this term.

Since our official opening event back in September, our Sixth Form students have already had lots of experiences and achievements!

Laurus Trust CFO Wendy Mason, CEO Linda Magrath, Hazel Grove High School Head of School Martin Stewart, Director of Sixth Form Jo Lambert and Sixth Form students Eliott and Lizzie cutting the ribbon, to officially open Hazel Grove Sixth Form.

A key highlight was when we selected 12 brilliant members for our first Sixth Form Cabinet, including Elliot and Lydia, our Cabinet Chair and Vice Chair.

These 12 students are the voice of our Sixth Form and promote the Four Cornerstones of the Laurus Trust.

Representing student viewpoints and developing their leadership skills, these students will also plan and organise charity fundraisers and competitions for themselves within the Sixth Form, as well as the main high school.

Our Year 12 students finished the term with a Charity Secret Santa, buying secret gifts for each other from local charity shops, to support charitable giving this season!

Students take a trip to University of Oxford

Back in September, Year 11 enjoyed two days in Oxford exploring the city and experiencing the University Open Day.

They stayed in the Halls of Residence at St. Peter’s College and attended a lecture on how to make competitive applications.

They also had a guided tour of New College and spent time looking at exhibits in the Natural History Museum.

During their visit, the students attended lectures at the Institute of Mathematics, the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology, and the Department of Physics and Philosophy.

The trip was a valuable experience for students as they consider their future steps and prepare for Life After Laurus.

A morning of democracy for the HGHS Mock Election

At the end of October, the Beliefs and Values department hosted the annual HGHS Mock Election.

Year 10 spent the morning learning all about the government, democracy and current affairs as they met political representatives.

After spending time hearing from each of the parties, students cast their votes in our Hazel Grove Polling station – the Liberal Democrats took the win this time!

The Mock Election was a fun and educational event that got students thinking politically!

An Evening of Storytelling: Drama Winter Showcase

This month, we were transported to a different world for the drama winter showcase. ‘An Evening of Storytelling’ told many famous tales from across generations.

The show was centred around four books, starting with the Year 7 company performing Narnia, the Year 8/9 company performing The Pied Pier, the Shakespeare company performing Macbeth and finally the Year 10 GCSE cohort performing DNA.

It was a delightful evening of entertainment and impressive performances, well done to everyone who was involved!

Festivities in full swing for the Winter Concert

On Monday evening, audiences were treated to a spectacular show of talent in this year’s Winter Concert. It featured performances from talented soloists Aster and Luke; the Orchestra; the Brass, Percussion, String and Woodwind Groups; KS3 Singers; Year 10 GCSE Music Class; Steel Pans Band; Senior Choir; School of Rock; Pop Choir and Soul Band – phew!

There was a delightful mix of festive tunes and music from across the ages, with wonderful singing from our choirs and impressive performances from our many musicians.

Well done to everyone who took part, and a big thank you to everyone who came along to support, we hope you enjoyed your evening!

And that’s a wrap!

We hope you enjoyed looking back at just some of the highlights from the first term of this academic year. From all of us at Hazel Grove High School, we wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
