Young Carers in Schools
A young carer is a child or young person who looks after or helps care for a family member who needs support because of illness, disability, mental health issues, or substance use.
As a school community, we want to help our young carers with the additional challenges they may face.
The Young Carers in Schools programme helps schools improve outcomes for young carers and celebrates good practice through the Young Carers in Schools Award.
Gold Young Carers Award
Here at Hazel Grove High School we are proud to work with and support our Young Carers.
We have received the Gold Award as part of the Young Carers In Schools programme run by Carers Trust and The Children’s Society. The Gold Award recognises our school’s work in ensuring that students don’t miss out on an education because of their caring responsibilities.
To achieve the Gold Award, we have demonstrated that we are actively working with young carers and their families to ensure they are recognised and fully supported. We have included young carers in school improvement plans and they are considered at every level of the school.
We work closely with Signpost, the Stockport young carer service, to ensure that we are offering the best possible support. Within school, we have a named member of the Leadership Team, Mr Howell, who is responsible for young carers, as well as a wider team of staff who support the work we do with these students.
