The Summer Term has been one full of excitement for Hazel Grove High School! As we reach the end of what has been a fantastic year, we would like to reflect on just a few of the many highlights from the final term before the Summer Holidays…

Summer Music Concert

Last week, we had our annual Summer Music Concert! It was a delightful evening of music, with showstopping performances from 6 soloists, the School of Rock, the Beginner Woodwind Group, the String, Guitar, and Vocal Groups, the Pop Choir, Year 10 GCSE Musicians, and the Soul Band – phew! Well done to all the students involved who worked hard to ensure the audience were treated to an evening full of entertainment and musical talent!

Students win Mother Tongue, Other Tongue Competition and visit Manchester Metropolitan University

You may remember the news we shared on Twitter and Facebook in June that at least one of our students was selected as a winner of the ‘Mother Tongue, Other Tongue’ (MTOT) poetry competition run by Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU).

Last week, 7 students took a trip to MMU to take part in a poet-led workshop with one of the multi-lingual poets who are friends of the MTOT project. The students then attended the award ceremony, presented by Carol Ann Duffy, where they collected their anthologies and certificates. We would like to congratulate these students on winning the competition and getting their work published in the 2022 MTOT anthology, what an achievement!

KS3 Dance competition team place 3rd at The Great Big Dance Off National Finals in Cheltenham

Rewind to April – the HGHS Key Stage 3 Dance competition team became the North West Regional Champions at The Great Big Dance Off in Warrington, qualifying them for the national finals.

Fast forward to the end of June – the group travelled to Cheltenham Town Hall for the national finals where they competed against 19 other KS3 finalists.  They performed superbly on the day, impressing the audience so much that they were placed 3rd nationally!

The students represented the school and Trust impeccably, bringing such life and vitality to the stage. With choreography by Harrison Jones from Debut Studios, the students took the judges and audience on a journey through a very lively detention hall. The students have worked incredibly hard over the year and truly deserve the success they have achieved. We hope to see the students auditioning for the competition team again next year and welcome all year groups to join the dance department in September at extra-curricular clubs and events!

Sports Day fun

This year’s Sports Day was a fantastic day of competitive fun! Students across all year groups took part in events such as javelin, long jump, and discus in an effort to score the most points and have their House crowned the champions. Everyone gave it their all, but there had to be a winner…

Congratulations to Altius – the winning House of Sports Day 2022!

Citius Charity Walk for St Ann’s Hospice

In May, Citius held a Charity Walk for St Ann’s Hospice in school. St Ann’s provide vital end of life support to those who need it most, and thanks to our students’ efforts, we managed to raise a whopping £1861.51 for them! This money will help the charity to continue the valuable work that they do. Thank you to everyone who donated and to those who took part in the walk!

Sporting Success!

This term has been full of success for many of our student sports teams.

Congratulations to the Year 7 Football Team for their victory at the Manchester United Emerging Talent Tournament after winning all four of their games against some of the best teams in the area. This completes a treble winning season for the squad and adds to the Stockport League and Cup trophies won back in May! Well done boys, you’ve absolutely smashed it this term!

Congratulations are also in order for the U15s Girls Football Team, who played fantastically and were crowned the champions at the U16s Greater Manchester County Schools FA Cup in May!

We would also like to congratulate the Year 9 Boys Football Team for becoming the Greater Manchester County Schools FA U14s Plate Champions 2022!

We hope you all have a fun and relaxing summer; you have all worked extremely hard this year and achieved so much. We look forward to welcoming you back next year and can’t wait to see what is to come, but for now, enjoy your well-deserved break!
