Earlier this month, students and staff from Hazel Grove High School (HGHS) had the opportunity to take part in a steel signing ceremony as the final stages of work begin, in the redevelopment of Hazel Grove Sixth Form (HGSF).

Construction began in May 2022 to ensure the Sixth Form centre would be ready for a new cohort of students in September 2023.

Director of Sixth Form, Mrs Lambert, and Head of School, Mr Stewart, joined groups of current HGHS KS4 students as they went on a tour of the site led by contractors from Rosslee Construction.

After touring the site, they had the opportunity to sign the steel frames of the building and become part of its history.

The newly redeveloped Sixth Form centre will offer a welcoming and professional environment, featuring a contemporary design over two floors.

Students will have access to dedicated Sixth Form spaces including full classrooms, ICT resources, Library, Refectory, Auditorium and Independent Study facilities.

Mrs Lambert said:

“We’ve been so excited to show some students around our new building this morning and we can’t wait to open our doors in September 2023.”

This month, students in Years 9 and 10 went on an important trip to Kraków in Poland.

The trip was held as an enrichment opportunity to support students in their learning about the Holocaust for Beliefs and Values.

On the first day, the group spent the morning at Auschwitz-Birkenau.

It was a tough morning, but students found the experience invaluable and learnt a lot.

Later on, they visited the Schindler museum and learnt about the complicated character of Oskar Schindler.

In the evening, the group had dinner at an authentic Jewish restaurant and were accompanied by musicians who treated them to some fantastic traditional songs!

The next day, students and staff toured the charming streets of Kazimierz – Kraków’s Jewish quarter.

Along the way, they stopped at the beautiful Remuh Synagogue.

Finally, they visited the Galicia Jewish Museum where they heard from a Holocaust survivor raised by a Polish family.

The trip was a fantastic opportunity for students to become immersed in the culture of Kraków as well as learning about its rich past.

Hazel Grove High School students join Stockport Council in a campaign to get parents to turn their car engines off while waiting for their children on the school pickup run. 

In December 2020, Stockport Council launched a campaign called ‘Turn it Off’, which urged parents and guardians to turn off their engines when waiting for children at school pick-up times.

Poor air quality is the largest environmental public health issue facing the UK and is estimated to contribute to the equivalent of 1,200 deaths in Greater Manchester each year.

One of the most common places for cars to be left idling is close to schools at drop off and pick up times.

This means school children are being exposed to increased and unnecessary air pollution. Air pollution affects health throughout our life, but it affects children more so as their lungs are still growing.

The campaign is asking parents and guardians to:

• Switch off their engines at the school gates and on surrounding roads when dropping children off.
• Get their children to catch the school bus if they are able to as it will help to cut down harmful air pollution, and tackle congestion.
• Walk or cycle to school. If parents can, try and leave the car at home and walk or cycle with their children to school. This will also help children be healthy and active growing up and is a great way to avoid the school run.
