A group of Hazel Grove High School (HGHS) students recently had an opportunity to experience Democracy in action with a trip to Stockport Council.

The Eco Council have been working hard this past term in the lead up to the Stockport Climate Action Network (CAN) meeting.

The Climate Action Network is a meeting of 45 schools across the local area with representatives focused on sustainability across the borough.

Students were joined by local councillors and the Mayor of Stockport.

They had the chance to present an opening statement for a motion which led to a spirited debate across the chambers, with the debate chaired by a Youth Council representative.

Students were able to put questions and points forward, experiencing the full voting procedure by submitting their ballot and witnessing the vote count.

The winning motion will be presented at a Full Council meeting in July with Stockport Council where the councillors said they are committed to acting on the debates and ideas.

HGHS has already benefited from last year’s winning CAN motion which resulted in a £1000 grant to supply students with eco-friendly period products.

We look forward to seeing the results in July!
