Young Carers

Young Carers in Schools

The 2011 Census identified 177,918 young carers in England and Wales (last available Census figures). Some estimates suggest that now as many as one in five schoolchildren are young carers (University of Nottingham 2018), with this number increasing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a school community we want to help our young carers with the additional challenges they may face

The Young Carers in Schools programme helps primary and secondary schools improve outcomes for young carers and celebrates good practice through the Young Carers in Schools Award.

Gold Young Carers Award

Here at Hazel Grove High School we are proud to work with and support our Young Carers.

We have received the Gold Award as part of the Young Carers In Schools programme ran by the Children’s Society. The Gold Award recognises our school’s work in ensuring that students don’t miss out on an education because of their caring responsibilities.

To achieve the Gold Award, we have demonstrated that we are actively working with young carers and their families to ensure they are recognised and fully supported. We have included young carers in school improvement plans and they are considered at every level of the school.

We work closely with Signpost, the Stockport young carer service, to ensure that we are offering the best possible support. Within school, we have a named member of the Leadership Team, Mr Howell, who is responsible for young carers, as well as a wider team of staff who support the work we do with these students.

If you are not sure if your child can be identified as a Young Carer, or would like to know about the support available, please speak to their Head of Year.
