Beliefs and Values

RE at HGHS explores world views and tackles ultimate questions.  It provides a platform for pupils to develop their social, moral, spiritual and cultural identity.  Students at HGHS study RE in year 7 and 8 for two hours a fortnight.  They explore topics such as community, animal rights and equality and learn about religious and non-religious viewpoints surrounding these topics, including Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Sikhism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Humanists.   RE is a GCSE option and pupils do a three year course from year 9.   RE is delivered by two specialists teachers who are dedicated to developing pupils’ opinions about the big questions we face in life, whilst comparing these to world views.  Through RE, pupils develop key skills needed in life and in other subject areas such as being able to  analyse and evaluate, essay writing skills, persuasive writing, presentation skills and group work.



In year 7 we start RE becoming shipwrecked on an Island, exploring communities, rules, punishment, ceremonies, celebrations and pilgrimages.  This is used throughout RE (year 7 right the way through to GCSE) to compare religious practices with our own island community created.  Pupils study a unit per term and are assessed in each unit and provided with written feedback on what they did well and how they can improve their mark next time.

Year 7 

Unit 1 – The Island

Looking at how communities develop and the importance of religious events such as baptism and pilgrimage.

Unit 2 – The Teachings of Jesus

What did Jesus teach?  Can we learn from his teachings?

Unit 3 – The Five Pillars of Islam

What are the five pillars of Islam?  Why are they important?

Unit 4  - Animal Rights

Should animals have rights?  What do Christians and Buddhist believe about how humans should “use” animals?

Unit 5 – Sikhism

How do beliefs and practices in Sikhism demonstrate the idea that we are all equal.

Year 8 

Unit 1 – The Island

Looking at how communities develop and the importance of religious events such as baptism and pilgrimage.

Unit 2 – Judaism

How do festivals show Jewish people’s relationship with God?

Unit 3 – Wisdom

What wisdom can we get from films, fables and religion?

Unit 4 – Jesus

Did a man called Jesus exist?  If so, was he the son of God?

Unit 5 – Prejudice & Discrimination

What does Christianity and Hinduim teach about how we should treat others who may be different from us?  How can their teachings make the world a better place?

Year 9

Unit 1 – Matters of Life and Death (Christianity)

What happens when we die?  Should we allow euthanasia?  Is human life important?  Where does life come from?  What do Christians believe about life and death?

Unit 2 – Christian beliefs

What is God like?  What happened to Jesus and why? Why do people suffer?  Can God and evil both exist?

Unit 3 – Living the Christian life

How do Christians worship God?  What is the future of the church?  How does the Church help people local, nationally and globally?

Unit 4 – Marriage and the Family (Christianity)

Why do people get married?  Why are families important?  Should Christians allow contraception? Why do people get divorced?  Are men and women equal in Christianity?  What different sexual relationships are there? 

Year 9s are assessed after every unit with an end of unit test.  They also have a mock exam at the end of year where they sit a past paper.

Year 10 

Unit 1 - Muslim Beliefs

What do Muslims believe?  What is the difference between Shi'a Muslims & Sunni Muslims? What do they believe about God?  Why do they believe in prophets? What is the role of angels according to Muslims?

Unit 2 - Peace & Conflict

Why do wars happen?  How are Muslims working towards world peace?  What is a Just War?  What is jihad? What are weapons of mass destruction?  How can we stop wars?  Should we be pacifists?

Unit 3 - Living the Muslim Life

What are the five pillars? Why do Muslims give so much to charity?  What do Muslims do on hajj?

Unit 4 - Crime and Punishment

What is crime? How should we punish?  Should we allow torture? Is the death penalty just? What do Muslims say about punishment?

Year 11 

We review the full course, focusing on perfecting exam technique whilst revisiting all 8 units.
