What we learn about in PE

The PE Department offer a diverse curriculum that aims to meet the needs of all our students in a practical environment. Key stage 3 students receive 4hrs of PE a fortnight with one of these lessons being a fitness focused lesson. Activities for these students include; Netball, Basketball, Football, Rugby, Badminton, Outdoor Adventurous Activities, Dance, Gymnastics, Table Tennis, Athletics, Rounders, Cricket. Students learn about the necessary skills and techniques required for these activities, as well as how to evaluate their performance, leading to a healthy, active lifestyle.

At Key stage 4, students receive 2hrs a fortnight of quality physical education. Activities include; Fitness, Netball, Basketball, Rounders, Athletics, Dodgeball, Table Tennis, Football, Frisbee and Dance. Students develop their skills and techniques further in competitive situations and use their own evaluations to make improvements in their performances.

In GCSE at Hazel Grove High School students will be able to take GCSE PE through the OCR exam board or the Cambridge National Award. Both of these courses involve an additional 5hrs of teaching and learning. Through the GCSE PE route students will learn about Anatomy and Physiology, Physical Training, Socio-cultural Influences, Sports Psychology, Health Fitness and Well-being. This is comprised of two 1hour exam papers and a practical assessment made up of 3 different activities.

Students opting to take the Cambridge National route will learn about Contemporary Issues in Sport and developing sports skills and leadership. These will be assessed through an hour exam and coursework based assessments.

The PE Department off an extensive extra-curricular programme with activities being offered every day afterschool and cater for all ages and abilities. We pride ourselves of the numbers of students choosing to stay behind and engage with these programmes.
