Students at HGHS study Mathematics from Year 7 to 11 and have the choice of staying on in our Sixth Form to continue their learning of the subject through A-Level Mathematics and even Further Mathematics.
Years 7 to 11 have either 7 or 8 hours of mathematics over the course of the two week timetable and cover a range of topics and skills based on Number and Calculations, Ratio and Proportion, Algebra, Shape and Space and Data Handling.
Students are encouraged throughout their lessons to develop their independent learning skills as well as working in pairs or in small groups. Elements of Problem Solving are integrated into lessons in order to help develop these skills, as well as promote a mastery of the topic, an opportunity to illustrate a full understanding of the work being covered.
Classes are set according to ability throughout Years 7 to 11 as this allows tailored teaching according to the needs of the students. There are opportunities to move up and down in these settings throughout the year, but most changes are done after assessments at the end of each term using teacher input as well as assessment scores.
Homework is set on a weekly basis and is mainly done through a topic task or by using a personalised homework booklet focusing on each student's five weakest areas from their recent assessment. Pin pointing students towards their gaps in knowledge and skills helps to support further progress in lessons.
A-Level Maths continues to increase in number following on from growing successes in our results each year. Students now complete two years of study covering Pure Maths, Mechanics and Statistics and only sit terminal exams at the end of Year 13.
Outside of lessons, there are revision classes run after school, support sessions run during Tutor Time, Homework club is run each week during lunch with IT provision and the Fit-4-Figures programme supports our Year 7 students by assigning them a Year 10 mentor to work alongside on a Friday morning before school.
The Mathematics Department continues to grow in number, now with a team of twelve staff. With a new GCSE well underway, the Department continue to be innovative and creative in their planning as students learn to study more challenging topics and test themselves with more problem solving style questions. With support from home, the hard working attitude of each student and the dedication of each member of staff, Hazel Grove High School’s Mathematics Department will continue to strive for even better and better results year on year.
