Curriculum

The curriculum for Hazel Grove High School is designed to encourage a thirst for knowledge and understanding and a love of learning. It covers a range of subjects and provides opportunities for academic, technical and sporting excellence.

The curriculum at Hazel Grove High School enables students to experience a wide range of subjects in Key Stage Three. Students develop a broad knowledge and skills base upon which they can build once they select their options for GCSE and begin to develop expertise across a number of different courses.

Hazel Grove High School has a curriculum offer which extends beyond the school day and offers a wide range of art, sporting and literacy based opportunities for the students.

During students time at Hazel Grove High School and Sixth Form they will have been supported and challenged to leave us:

  • Demonstrating respect for themselves and others, aware of how their words and actions influence and affect others
  • Making informed decisions about their lifestyle choices; aware of how their actions now will impact on their future and the future of the wider society of which they are a part
  • Aware of their own strengths as a learner whilst still mindful of areas they need to continue to develop in the future. Furnished with resilience to tackle new challenges independently or as a part of a larger team
  • Equipped with literacy and numeracy skills which make them effective communicators in the world beyond college
  • An appreciation of cultural and social diversity with the ability to reflect on the world around them and their place within it now and in the future

Curriculum Entitlement for Key Stage Four at Hazel Grove High School 

In Years 9, 10 and 11 as a student at Hazel Grove High School:

  • I have access to a curriculum which is broad and balanced, enabling me to receive a good grounding in a range of different subjects.
  • I have access to teaching within a group which provides me with both challenge and support.
  • I have access to a tutor group where I am able to work alongside people from other classes to explore issues relating to the world around me and engage in competition for my Community.
  • I have the ability to shape my own learning by selecting from a number of different subjects within the options system to create my own curriculum.
  • I study for at least one nationally recognised qualifications in science.
  • I study at least one nationally recognised qualification in mathematics.
  • I study for at least two nationally recognised qualifications in English.
  • I will leave Year 11 with at least 9 nationally recognised qualifications.
  • I receive independent careers information and guidance to enable me to think about how to make appropriate decisions about my future. I am also provided with work related learning and enterprise opportunities across the curriculum.

Pupils must also study religious education (RE), and secondary schools must provide sex education. The content of these two subjects is decided locally but must remain within the law. All secondary schools are responsible for providing careers, enterprise education and citizenship. Schools organise their own timetable, and can decide what else to teach their pupils.

Timetables 

We have five lessons a day that are 1 hour long. The curriculum on offer is reviewed every year and adjusted, where necessary, according to the learning needs of the students in a particular band.

Our timetables have 50 periods per fortnight.
