There are four full-time members of the MFL department, and we are usually based on the second floor in West tower. We offer French, German and Spanish from KS3 to A Level.
In year 7 pupils currently have a taster of French, German and Spanish during their first full term. Pupils select their first and second choice, and continue to study one language up to the end of year 9. In years 7 and 8 there are 5 lessons per fortnight, 4 in year 9. At options in year 9 all pupils are encouraged to continue their language studies to GCSE level.
Over the course of study pupils will be learning how to interact in the Target Language. Much emphasis is placed on being able to ask and answer questions, and how to deal with unknown language. We also learn how the different language “works” – such as how verbs are different, and word order patterns.
Pupils will access a wide range of topics that enable them to talk about what is important to them and their lives. We strive to develop pupils’ “can do” approach – focusing on the ability to understand and be understood, and not necessarily always getting it “right”!
In addition we look at these aspects and how they may be different across the French, German or Spanish speaking countries. This broadens pupils’ understanding of the wider world around them and the importance of being able to use a different language – even if just a little – to break down barriers. Recent trips include residential stays in Germany and France.
