On 4th July 2017, Mr Browne, Miss Robins and Miss Hammersly and 26 year 9 students went on the DofE qualifying expedition in the Buxton area. We set off from Windgather Rocks after brushing up on our climbing techniques with the climbers and headed up the hill, making our way to Cats Tor and onwards to Shining Tor. The views were stunning and there was only blue skys and sunshine to be seen! It was then time for Lunch outside the now disused Cat and Fiddle Pub, we managed to find a seat the on picnic tables which we were very content with!
Gradbach campsite was hidden in the woodland and that night we were able to have an open fire to fend off the army of midges once it was dark. Being in the countryside most students thought it would be silent but we had an owl cooing through the night, cows mooing and we were awaken to hear birds tweeting...a very peaceful way to wake up!
On the last day we started off at forest wood before climbing very steeply towards the Roaches where the breeze was very strong and the views were beautiful. We enjoyed our lunch on the top of the roaches picking the best view point while we ate. We were very happy to complete the qualifying expedition without getting lost!
The whole DofE experience has been fantastic and it has made me learn so much about team work, problem solving and leadership. Overall, everyone had a really great time - we're looking forward to doing Silver Award soon!
Massive thank you to Mr Browne, Miss Robins, Miss Hammersly, Mr Street and Mr Massey for organising a great experience!
